NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74. It can help spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.

The NHS Health Check is performed at the surgery. The check is in two parts. The first part is a 10 minute appointment to take blood tests including your cholesterol level. The second part is a 30 minute appointment on another day. Both appointments are with a specially trained Healthcare Assistant.

At the second appointment, the Healthcare Assistant will ask you some questions about your lifestyle and family history, measure your height and weight, and take your blood pressure. The test results are used to calculate your chance of getting heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes.

You will then receive personalised advice to improve your risk. This could include talking about how to improve your diet and the amount of physical activity you do. You may be offered medication to lower your cholesterol, or given advice on how to lose weight or stop smoking.
